Season 2023-2024
Ladies’ 5s in great win over Oxford 5s
Published on 24th Sep, 2023
A sunny Saturday morning saw the Ladies 5s start their first home league game of the season. Despite a new look team, it wasn’t long before connections were being made all over the pitch. A period of sustained attack and a short corner eventually led to Sherene sweeping in a cross from the right to open the scoring.
Some lovely one and two touch play led to some great passing moves. The inner line of Emma, Masha and Heather were working hard in the channels. Nina was setting the press brilliantly, making it hard for Oxford to get the ball out of their half. When they did, the defence – with a perfect balance of youth and experience in Lydia, Holly, Susan, Jane and Clare – remained steadfast.
Mia was called upon infrequently but dealt with what came calmly and efficiently and together they successfully defended five short corners. Minty remained strong in both defence and attack, with some lovely passes (and the occasional tumble) and Catherine – on return from injury – provided quality in the midfield and a stirring half time talk.
Susan demanded a further three goals in the second half – unfortunately we were only able to manage two – one from a cross from Sherene and one deflection from a stunning strike from the top of the D, also from Sherene – both goals by Rebecca from a combined distance of around two feet.
As Oxford began to tire, Hawks produced some lovely passing moves with Ella providing some beautiful touches, Emma showing some strong running on the ball and Masha producing a well-deserved Player of the Match performance.
Overall, an excellent 3-0 win and an impressive team performance, showing considerable promise for the league campaign ahead.
