Season 2021-2022
Hawks U16 Boys fall short in valiant effort
Published on 04th Aug, 2021
With the above in mind, Reading were welcomed to the Hawks’ nest at Banbury Road. The 1st XI provided a decent prologue by winning their warm-up game before the main event - the Home Counties junior league opener.
After twice hitting the post, Reading could not break down the Hawks defence in the first quarter. 0-0. Special shout out to Ben in goal, proving to be more Allisson than Arrizabalaga.
The second quarter began in a similar fashion, Hawks purposefully (?) absorbing pressure and playing on the break. Only a top bins strike from a Reading player eventually broke the deadlock as the sides went in 1-0 at HT.
Whatever was said at half time by the new useless coach didn’t work as Reading scored immediately in the third quarter with a scrambled tap in. Much to do. Having battled hard all game, Sam Hill and TC turned the tide of the game. Aerials, 3D skills and plenty of testosterone fuelled aggression in between, the Hawks looked dangerous at the third quarter ended 2-0.
No miracle at Istanbul was to recreated but the final quarter made for compelling viewing. A dragflick from TC saw us get back into the game with 10 to go. Social distancing was exemplified perfectly in the middle of the pitch as the game swung violently from end to end. The well drilled Reading side now looked leggy and flustered, and the Hawks created several chances and corners.
With 5 to go the goalkeeper was taken off in a desperate bid to win the game, with Reading then failing to score two open goals as the Hawks desperately pushed forward. Despite short corner in the last play, a comeback wasn’t to be, as Reading deservedly took the 3 points.
Seriously though, what a game. Hard work, talent and attitude in abundance. I cannot wait to continue with the team!!
MOM: Ben. Superb saves.
