S Berks 2s probe too strong for L5s

Published on 27th Nov, 2022

The Ladies 5’s travelled far away again this Saturday to play against south Berkshire 2s  in the cold weather in a later than planned start - A special shout out to Charlie for playing twice this weekend and all the traveling she did!

We came out strongly with some great hockey, lots of passes and connections putting some great pressure being on South Berkshire. We had a few breaks down the wing in the first half, especially a beautiful run by Char and some gorgeous connections in the forward line led to a pass from Lizzie to Sherene.  She had a strike to Char on post just narrowly missing the goal. Gasps could be heard on and off the pitch as we all thought we had secured the goal!

The defence put in some hard graft in the first half as the S Berks attackers were on our wide halves for every transfer, causing the need for us to use some great skill and tactful passing back. Unfortunately, S Berkshire 2s came out with a very strong side and they scored some fabulous goals in the first half. Hawks Ladies’ 5s all kept their heads up and kept working hard until the whistle.

After some half time snacks and strong chat from Susan we kept persevering in the second half through what became a very physical game and raised our standard, breaking out and getting a lot more attacking play. The last 15 minutes of the game we won two short corners following great runs up the wing and some amazing transferring from Lydia in the centre midfield. First, Sherene had a fantastic strike on goal winning the second short and then an injection from Lizzie to Char at the top, who with her incredible fake slap succeeded in tricking the defence and striking straight to the bottom right corner where Holly secured a chip into the goal. It was a fantastic goal, well worked from the whole team connecting up the pitch and really proving all the work put into our penalty corner drills is paying off! The whole team worked their socks off the whole game, and we came away with a 5-1 loss. However, it was a great quality game of hockey against a very good side, and we are all proud of the work we put in.

Char very deservingly won Player of the Match for all her hard work!
