Ladies’ 7s in tough game with Oxford 6s

Published on 16th Oct, 2022

On a lovely sunny Saturday afternoon, Hawks 7s geared up for a local game against Oxford 6s. Hawks started strong with lots of lovely passing around the Oxford D. However, against the run of play, Oxford managed to get their first goal which was unfortunately closely followed by a second. However, this did not deter Hawks. Following a quick turnaround of play, we were soon back in the Oxford D where our first goal came from Katie with a lovely post up! However, the celebrations were short lived when Oxford came back at us, scoring another two goals. Hawks again turned the play around with a great ball through to the forwards. The forwards made some lovely passes around the Oxford defence and with a foot, they won a short corner. Aimee received the ball at the top of the D and took a lovely shot at goal. This was deflected by the opposition into the net, scoring us our second goal! At half time the score was 4-2 to Oxford.

During our half time talk, multiple suggestions were made on ways to improve our play. This included posting up, switching play and marking tighter. Hawks were ready to take on the second half!

The second half began, and we looked to be evenly matched. The talk at half time proved to be effective. We had some great opportunities in the Oxford half with Hannah, Calla, Charlotte P, Aimee and Camilla working together to try and break through the Oxford defence but it held strong. The game turned around quickly with Oxford in our half again. Although our defence and half backs worked tirelessly to hold back the attack, Oxford won a couple of unfortunate short corners which resulted in a goal. In the end, despite some beautiful saves by Daisy and some great defending, Oxford managed to score another two goals resulting in a 7-2 win.

Overall, the score line of the day does not reflect the gameplay by Hawks. The game was relentless and fast with lots of play between ends. Everyone played so well and worked hard. Nominations for player of the match include Hannah, Eva, Charlotte V and Ellie but the overall winners were Aimee and Calla!!

Many thanks to Mak Diab for the excellent photos.
