Season 2023-2024
Ladies’ 5s fight hard for another 3 points
Published on 18th Dec, 2023
Having been hindered by that darn rule 8.2, illness and work, a different and slightly smaller than usual Hawks Ladies’ 5s squad travelled to Witney for their final match before the Christmas break, eager to maintain their recent winning streak.
The game started off with a lot of possession from both sides and attacking play in the circles, with shots on goal from both teams. The first half ended with a no goals on the scoreboard.
At halftime, the team fuelled on sweets and the advice of team captain, Susan, and Jacs who had come over to offer some perspective from the sidelines. As Rebecca rightly said, the game was going to be won by the team who wanted it more.
The second half started with both teams going out fighting. Hawks defence held strong, however, and after a ball was turned over to the attacking players, Rabiya managed to slot it in the goal, putting the team one-nil up.
With a goal on the scoreboard and a few falls and injuries, the temperature of the game continued to grow.
Despite a few brilliant runs and the Hawks players maintaining a better structure, they were unlucky to concede a goal from a short corner.
Fortunately, with the score now tied, Hawks 5s didn’t give up. Every player fought for every ball in their space and kept a cool head despite the pressure. Their efforts paid off when a pass to Rabiya in the circle resulted in a second goal within the final five minutes.
The girls were delighted to finish the year with another 3 points, and to finish the match with Christmas chocolates from Susan!
Player of the match deservedly went to Rabiya, with nominations for Bea, Cat, Masha and Susan.
