Oxford Hawks Mens 5’s vs Henley 3s – 19.10.24

Published on 22nd Oct, 2024

Following a nervy and narrow victory the week before, it was apparent soon after the first whistle that a more comfortable win for the 5s this week was off the table. Despite an energetic warm up for Hawks, Henley had the best of the early chances although thankfully the quick reactions of the keeper and defenders kept the score at 0-0. Hawks slowly grew in to the game, with excellent movement and passing in midfield. A few chances began to materialise for the home side with the best of these being a 3 on the keeper, but despite taking it past the keeper the Hawks attacker just liked dribbling too much and took it just the wrong side of the dead ball line (rumour has it, he is still dribbling now). A short corner towards the end of the half found the back of the net from a direct strike, but given the Henley defender's head nearly ended up in the net with the ball, it was rightly ruled out.

Halftime came and went with no score. The second half proved more of the same end to end action with multiple chances missing the finishing touch from both sides. 10 minutes in, a sharp slap into the oppositions D was deflected goalwards only to be partially stopped by the keeper. With the ball goal bound, it was given the poachers treatment from 1 meter out to make it 1-0 to Hawks. Despite going behind, Henley continued to be a threat with some chances well saved or going just wide. Hawks managed to wrestle control of the game for the last 15 mins to see out the narrow victory and go into the half term break well positioned 4th in the league.
