1 - O45s win

This was by far the most successful and action-packed Summer that Masters Hockey has seen at Hawks! Here’s a timeline of how the last few weeks and months have unfolded….

We start off at the National Stadium at Lee Valley where the Women’s O45s made it through to their final at Lee Valley back in May, against Burnt Ash. And WON!! They won 4-3 after a thrilling final, which perhaps shouldn’t have been so thrilling, as they were cruising at 3-0 at one point…. But all was well in the end!

2 - Mon and Charlie

We’ve also had a huge number of players representing South Central (the regional team) in the various national competitions. So we now move to the middle of May, where Monica Murphy and Charlie Bransby represented South Central Over 35s, and Phil Hargraves, Andy Sumser, Jules Easterbrook, Colin Burrell were up in Wakefield playing for the Over 55s.

In the same weekend Phil Williams and Caroline Baggs represented the Over 65s…

At the end of May, we move north where Sherene Butler, Rebecca Black and Karen Easterbrook are all playing for the Over 55s

And in early June, Simon Robinson played for the Over 40s at Old Loughts, while Susan McErlain and Bernie Urtz were at Stourport with the Over 60s. We also had Richard Wilsdon and Chris Billington at Guildford playing for the Over 70s

It’s not all about the players though! In mid-June our very own Dave Hughes and Richard Walsh were umpiring at the Men’s Over 45s in Basingstoke, along with friend of the Club Martyn Shuttler!

And this same weekend, Sophie Dawes was busy picking up a bronze medal with the Over 45s, while Caroline Baggs won the Home Nations Cup with England Over 70s

Later in June we had the South Central Women’s Over 50s in action, featuring Kathryn Poulter and Caz Batten, plus Becky Hibbert was in Valencia at the European Championships with England Over 35s! We enjoyed following their tournament success over insta, and they came SO close to gold – narrowly beaten 2-1 by Germany in the final.

Also here’s a great photo of our O50s who played against Cardiff who were on tour. Final score 2-2 – and a summary from Gillers here: “Both goals inevitably scored by Adam laird. Foggy was man of the match and tackled as hard as he did when he was in the 1sts.  Highlight was being buzzed by a Lancaster bomber that flew low over the pitch!”

Here’s another great photo – a lovely group pic from the Women’s Masters social held at the Club a few weeks ago, to celebrate the combined successes of our Masters teams this season – an area of the Club really going from strength to strength!

Steve Griffiths was then in action for South East at the Over 65s in Southgate in the middle of July.

On top of all this, we also have ex Hawks players Bernie Landels now playing for Western Australia (and non travelling reserve) for the Australian team, and Clare Hooper and Emma Ryan turning out for their respective area teams in New Zealand – congratulations to them too!

And the Masters action is still going on! We have both Colin Burrell and Caroline Baggs in action at the European Championships in Nottingham from 8 August – we wish you all the best.

Huge thanks to club photographer Evelyn Hargraves for providing many of the above photos!
