The L3s were looking to get back to winning ways after their first league loss in over 12 months last week - a nail-biting 2-1 defeat to Oxford. Fuelled by the paint fumes from the newly-redecorated changing rooms, the team completed an energetic warm up and looked to take control of the match from the start.
Hawks settled well into their preferred style of play - quick passing and effective transfers keeping Wycombe on their toes. Despite concerted pressure on the Wycombe D throughout the first half, Hawks were unable to make the breakthrough. The 2-castle short corner set up gave more options, but Wycombe's quick-footed goalkeeper meant Hawks couldn't convert. Strong Wycombe tackles and quick breaks won them a short corner, but they also failed to convert and the first half ended 0-0.
Hawks came out with renewed energy for the second half, determined to get on the scoresheet. With the majority of possession, Hawks' passing game earned them many opportunities on goal, denied by Wycombe's keeper and some crucial tackles by Wycombe's defence. Momentum continued to build until late in the second half, when Mary Harrington drove along the baseline to slip the ball to Flora Miller waiting on the right post. Time seemed to pause as Flora calmly took the ball and deftly flicked it over the diving keeper - 1-0 to Hawks and we celebrated like we'd won the league!
MOM Felicity Hughes tidied up through the middle, with diving tackles and excellent traps (Flick's quick picks) breaking down Wycombe's attacking efforts time and again. A hard fought and keenly won 3 points and we're up to 2nd place in the league ready for next week's trip to Reading.
