Lots of Hockey, Happy Faces and Hot Chocolate

On 7th December 2022 Oxford Hawks in Partnership with St. Edwards, Oxford, hosted the 3rd P2000 Festival of Hockey at St. Edward's School. 5 schools from the P2000 programme took up the offer of an afternoon of competitive fun (in the sun!), putting into practice the skills learned over the previous term (and before). The 5 schools that participated were: Kirtlington Primary Windmill Primary Hanborough Manor Primary William Fletcher Primary Chalgrove Community Primary This resulted in over 140 pupils aged Year 5 & Year 6 playing on an astroturf, many for the first time, and getting to properly experience our brilliant game. See across the page for what some of the school's have said about their experience of the day!

ST EDWARD'S PARTNERSHIP

This is now the 3rd P2000 festival hosted in partnership with St. Edward's Oxford, and the relationship continues to go from strength to strength. Through a mutual desire to get into the community and help provide opportunities to those that may otherwise not have them, Teddies have been instrumental in the setting up and running of these festivals through the use of their resources, staff expertise and Young Leaders. We are very grateful as a club that they continue to support our desire to grow the game, making it more accessible than ever before!

WHAT IS PROJECT 2000?

Project 2000 (P2000) is Oxford Hawks Hockey Club's primary outreach programme. We have the ambitious initial target of delivering 2000 hours across a school year into state primary schools through a combination of curriculum and after school clubs. Year 1 saw us deliver 450 hours, and we are on track to deliver over 650 hours in year 2. We are always on the look out for new schools to deliver to, coaches to deliver, schools to partner with and sponsorship - so if you'd like anymore information on any of this please get in touch.

Chalgrove School has been participating in weekly hockey lessons with Oxford Hawks for around 18 months. As a result, hockey has become a central part of our PE Curriculum. The children look forward to their weekly sessions and we relish having the opportunity to have an expert lead lessons, which is so often lacking in Primary Schools - teachers are expected to be a 'Jack of all trades'! The children's skills have come on phenomenally and many children are now part of a weekly After School Club. The opportunity to take part in a friendly tournament, such as the P2000 Festival of Hockey, is the icing on the cake, where learning becomes purposeful. Not only that, as a result of covid our children have had very limited experiences meeting other children; increasing this opportunity through cross-school festivals provides excellent preparation for Secondary school. Thank you.

Kerry Hudson, Chalgrove

On 7th December 2022, three teams made up of our year 5 and 6 pupils attended a hockey tournament at St Edwards in Oxford. Although the afternoon was very much a tournament, it offered a much richer experience for our children, from the beautiful sports facilities we were utilsing to the meeting of new children and adults who were either competing or facilitating in the event. The organisation of the event was fantastic, with it being very clear who we were playing with and where we would have the match. Atmospherically, the event offered an incredibly positive environment, with a sense of friendly competition and inclusion, regardless of gender, ability or age. We are thoroughly enjoying having Oxford Hawks coaching our year 5 and 6 pupils. The children are visibly growing in confidence, their teamwork skills are vastly improving and the resilience of the children is to be admired. It is great to have a competitive sport that is a popular alternative to football and netball, and I intend to continue including hockey on our PE curriculum for the foreseeable future.
